What Is the WA Cares Fund?
The WA Cares Fund is Washington State's long-term care insurance program. It provides a lifetime benefit of up to $36,500 for long-term care services. The program is funded through a 0.58% payroll premium paid by employees.
Who Pays?
Employees pay the full 0.58% — employers withhold and remit it but don't contribute. However, employers must track exemptions, calculate withholdings, and file quarterly reports.
Exemptions
Employees may be exempt if they:
- Purchased qualifying private long-term care insurance before Nov 1, 2021
- Are a veteran with 70%+ service-connected disability
- Are a non-immigrant visa holder
- Work in WA but live in a bordering state
Disclaimer: Estimates only. Consult ESD for exact withholding requirements.
